Summarizing a news article is often very important for understanding the primary objective behind a news article. A news piece often tends to be lengthy with a lot of details. Making a summary of the same allows the main points and details to get focused easily. Here’s how you can make a summary from a news article.
Tips on How to Summarize a News Article
1) Be succinct
It is better to be short and clear than long and unclear. You will lose the readers’ attention if you write too much. Be sure to keep the main idea, who, what, when, where and why in mind for each sentence you write.
2) Write it in your own way
Just because you have to use the news article, do not think that it means you cannot write it in your own way. You can even add if you want – as long as they are relevant to the story. If you want to explain something further, just add a few sentences of your own.
3) Use bullet points
It is easier to read your work if you have it in bullet points. Also, it saves you time and effort. Make sure each point is made clear and distinct so that there will be no confusion when you read the list of bullet points again.
4) Be sure to keep the main idea, who, what, when where, and why in mind
Your list should be completely full of information. However, in order to make the reader remember that important thing you want them to know, do not focus so much on everything. Instead of focusing on everything you can focus on just one thing. You can try and summarise using an eye-catcher.
5) Don’t reproduce the whole article
Make sure you only add new information to it, not the whole article. Keep the main ideas that you want to draw out of the article in mind and focus on one interesting point before moving on.
6) Find a picture or graphic to go with it
If you are going to summarize the article, then you will want to include some sort of visual stimulus for the readers. Instead of making your articles dull and boring, explain the article visually. Try and include a photograph with your summary so that when people read it, they can see what you mean. This way the reader will remember what you were talking about more easily than if you just wrote out an entire description in the text without any pictures or graphics.
7) Use your own words
You cannot always use the article verbatim, because you may use too many words that are not relevant to your summary. Make sure you are clear and make your own way of summarizing. You can even add if you want – as long as they are relevant to the story. If you want to explain something further, just add a few sentences of your own.
8) Limit it to 30-50 words
This is about the maximum length you should get for a list – depending on the length of the article. This is based on how much information it takes for the reader to remember what was said in the article without seeing it again and again.
Make sure that when you explain something in your own words, you are straightforward. Do not add any other unnecessary information. Be sure to keep the main idea, who, what, when, where and why in mind for each sentence you write.
